About the Northwest Passage Itinerary
This itinerary takes you through the Northwest Passage, a sea route connecting the northern Atlantic and Pacific Ocean through the Arctic Ocean. You will visit the West coast of Greenland as well as various islands of the north Canadian archipelago, witness impressive icebergs and glaciers as well as marvel at the wildlife and history. Norwegian Vikings sailed as far north and west as Ellesmere Island, Skraeling Island and Ruin Island for hunting expeditions and trading with the Inuit. The desire to establish a commercial sea route motivated much of the European exploration of the coasts of North America. The belief that a route lay to the far north persisted for several centuries and led to numerous expeditions into the Arctic. Many ended in disaster, including that by Sir John Franklin in 1845. While searching for him the McClure Arctic Expedition discovered the Northwest Passage in 1850. In 1906, the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen first successfully completed a passage from Greenland to Alaska in the sloop Gjøa.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Your adventure begins. You will fly from Canada your port of embarkation. Your ship will set sail this evening. As you settle into your cabin, your ship will head northwards.
Day 2-3
Fjords await you. Your adventure continues as your ship explores the scenic coast of western Greenland. The coast provides a mix of historical sites, small villages, and breathtaking scenery. Glaciers abound.
Day 4-5
It’s time to head east. Your crossing of Baffin Bay towards Canada will depend on the weather and ice conditions. During your crossing be sure to watch out for several whale species, birds, and seals. Expect to be entertained by lectures onboard or take this time to relax with your shipmates.
Day 6-12
Your ship will now wind its way east through several islands. The ice and wildlife conditions will guide your explorations of these Canadian islands. You will learn about Inuit history in the town of Pond Inlet. Lancaster Sound and Prince Leopold Island will provide plentiful opportunities for wildlife viewings. Polar bears, birds, and beluga whales abound. Your adventures will continue to overlap with parts of the lost Franklin Expedition. The crew will help you learn all that you want to know about the history.
Day 13
Your adventure ends in a small town of the Northwest Passage, for example Cambridge Bay which is an important fishing village. You might be able to see remains from the ill-fated expedition. After learning some Inuit history, you will fly from here back to Canada.
Welcome Aboard the Ioffe
Built for polar research, the Akademik Ioffe is a modern, comfortable and safe vessel that carries a maximum of 96 passengers. The ship underwent extensive renovation of cabins and the bar in 2011, giving it a new feel.
She has public spaces ideally suited for small group lectures to full ship briefings. The bar or the lounge are great places to have a drink and take in the scenery, and the library provides a spot to relax or catch up on some reading. The Ioffe and her sister ship, the Akademik Vavilov are two of the most stable, advanced vessels in the expedition cruise business.

Join us on the Bridge
There is an open-bridge policy and guests are welcome to meet the navigating crew at virtually any time of day; there’s always something to learn from the officers on watch and the bridge is one of the best places on the ship for spotting whales and sea birds.
An expedition gear package is included
An expedition cruise requires a fair bit of planning and some special items of clothing and equipment are needed. You will have use of an expedition wet weather gear package free of charge, which includes a quality waterproof/windproof jacket and bib-pants as well as insulated, comfortable rubber boots designed for extended walking. A set of expedition binoculars and a walking pole are also available for the duration of your voyage. This saves you buying expensive items you may only ever use once and eliminates the need to carry such cumbersome gear all the way to the ship. If you do have your own gear, of course you are welcome to bring it. Make sure it is wind and waterproof. If you have questions about gear, feel free to ask.

- The Single supplement is 1.5x the published twin rate for twin-semi private, twin private and superior cabins. Single supplement is 2x the published twin rate for suites. Single supplement is not available in triple cabins. No single supplement applies for passengers willing to share.
- Voyages commencing/ending in Stanley (Falkland Islands) or King George Island (Antarctica) include flights from Punta Arenas (Chile).
- Voyages ending in King George Island (Antarctica) include one night hotel accommodation in Punta Arenas at the end of the trip.
- Mandatory Emergency Evacuation insurance is required on all trips.
- All trips subject to possible fuel surcharge.

- Expedition Snowshoeing (maximum 12 participants) – free
- Expedition Field Photography (maximum 18 participants) – $45.
