What’s a Day Like on an Antarctica Expedition Cruise?

Wondering what a typical day in Antarctica looks like during an expedition cruise? As a guest onboard an Antarctic expedition ship, I can tell you, every moment feels like stepping into another world.

From early morning wake-up calls to close encounters with wildlife, Zodiac cruises through iceberg-filled bays, and informative lectures onboard, no two days are exactly alike. But here’s a glimpse into a full, unforgettable day exploring the White Continent.

Morning Wake-Up & Breakfast Onboard the Expedition Ship

At 7:00 a.m., our expedition leader greeted us over the PA system with a cheerful voice and the morning update: Temperature: 1ºC | Wind: 29 knots

A little windy, but safe to begin the day’s adventure. The excitement of being in Antarctica made it easy to get out of bed, even though our cabin was warm and comfortable.

From 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., a generous buffet breakfast was served in the dining room. Guests could enjoy a wide variety: scrambled eggs, bacon, smoked salmon, oatmeal, fresh fruit, French toast, and more. It was the perfect fuel for the busy day ahead.

Organized Groups & IAATO Guidelines

To protect the fragile environment and wildlife, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) limits landings to no more than 100 people at a time. Our group had been divided into two teams:

> Yellow + Blue: first landing

> Red + Green: first Zodiac cruise

This system ensured every passenger had time both on land and on the water, rotating after about an hour.

Zodiac Cruise in Wilhelmina Bay: Icebergs, Penguins & Whales

Our morning excursion was a Zodiac cruise in Wilhelmina Bay, one of Antarctica’s most breathtaking locations. Dressed in our expedition parkas, snow pants, and waterproof boots, we boarded the Zodiacs and set out across a sea of blue icebergs.

We spotted:

-Gentoo penguins diving gracefully through the icy water

-Blue-eyed shags perched on rocks

-Antarctic skuas circling above

Our Zodiac driver, an ornithologist, shared fascinating details about these birds. Then, the highlight: a minke whale surfaced just a few meters away from our boat, drawing gasps and laughter from everyone nearby.

Wilhelmina Bay, located between the Reclus Peninsula and Cape Anna on the Antarctic Peninsula, is often called “Whale-mina Bay” thanks to its frequent whale sightings. Originally discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in the late 1800s, it’s a top destination for expedition cruises due to its rich wildlife and jaw-dropping scenery.

Midday Lectures & Lunch Onboard

Back on board, we warmed up with coffee and complimentary cookies (available 24/7) and made our way to the main lounge for a lecture from our expedition team.

This time, the topic was the historic race to the South Pole between Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott, an inspiring and dramatic tale of human endurance during Antarctica’s Heroic Age of Exploration.

Lunch was served at 12:30 p.m., with a wide selection of hot dishes and desserts. The dining staff was always friendly, offering excellent service throughout the voyage.

Afternoon Landing on Danco Island: Penguins & Pristine Views

In the afternoon, we prepared for our second Antarctic landing, this time on Danco Island in the scenic Errera Channel. Snow began to fall just as we geared up, creating an even more magical atmosphere.

Once ashore, we followed a flagged path to a Gentoo penguin rookery. According to IAATO rules, we kept a respectful 5-meter distance, but curious penguins often came much closer, completely unfazed by our presence.

We sat in silence, captivated by the surroundings, snow-covered hills, the sound of squawking chicks, and a sense of peace that’s hard to describe.

Afterward, a 45-minute Zodiac ride gave us a new perspective on the island’s icy shoreline, as snowflakes continued to fall gently all around us.

Danco Island is home to about 3,000 pairs of Gentoo penguins and offers a gentle hike to a 150-meter summit, providing stunning views of the Danco Coast and Rongé Island on clear days.

Evening Recap, Lectures & Dinner

Once back on the ship, we had time to change into dry clothes and unwind before the evening recap and briefing. Two more short presentations followed, one on ancient Antarctic cartography, the other on glaciology, both engaging and informative.

At 7:30 p.m., we gathered for a three-course à la carte dinner. Each night onboard offered delicious meals and an opportunity to relax and reconnect with fellow travelers.

Nightlife in Antarctica: Games & Glowing Skies

After dinner, the main lounge hosted a fun “Sing or Dance” game, while the ship’s bartenders mixed creative cocktails for those looking to celebrate the day.

During the Antarctic summer, the sun never truly sets, it just hovers near the horizon, so it’s easy to lose track of time. Even close to midnight, the skies were glowing with soft, surreal light.

Finally, it was time for a warm shower and a well-earned rest. After such an incredible day on the White Continent, I was exhausted in the best way, and already dreaming about what tomorrow in Antarctica would bring.
