If you only have three days to spend in Tierra del Fuego, these are the “must do” activities during your stay!
VISIT THE STUNNING TIERRA DEL FUEGO NATIONAL PARK
TDF National park is about 20 kilometers away from the city center of Ushuaia. If you plan to spend the whole day
For travelers looking for a guided half-day excursion on the National Park, you have the option to book an excursion that will show you the highlights of the National Park and can also offer a short trek along the most visited trails of the park. Also, at the National Park you’ll find the most southerly Argentinian post office, so you can send your post cards from there and get your passport stamped as being one of the privileged visitors to have visited the post office!
TREKKING TO THE VINCIGUERRA GLACIER
This excursion will give us the opportunity to enjoy a journey along really wild paths in the Andes Mountain Range. Our will is to achieve Vinciguerra Glacier and Laguna de los Tempanos (Icebergs Lagoon).
We will start crossing Andorra Valley and Grande Stream in the north direction to go into the forest ascending steep slopes that will lead us towards the valley of Vinciguerra Glacier. Once we are out of the vegetation line, a final ascend on stone ground will take us to Laguna de los Témpanos at the bottom of the glacier.
When we achieve our goal, lunch and a hot beverage will give us enough strength for putting on the crampons and make a trip on the millennial ice of Vinciguerra Glacier.
SAIL THE BEAGLE CHANNEL
You leave the local port for Alicia Island, which is home to a colony of sea lions. Then it’s on to Isla de los Pájaros, an island inhabited by imperial shags and white-bellied shags.
The next island on the list is Isla de los Lobos, where two types of sea lions are found, and finally the trip takes you to the Faro Les Eclaireus, a lighthouse constructed in 1919. Some departures offer a short hike on Bridges Island, where remains of Yamana camps can be found.
Two trips depart daily every day of the year (10 a.m. and 3 p.m.)
In high summer a 7 p.m. sunset departure is added.
HORSEBACK RIDE TO MONTE SUSANA
This trip will take you down the paths taken by the inmates of the Ushuaia prison in the years when they worked as lumberjack in the forests around Ushuaia.
On horseback, you will ride up along the sediments of a glacier moraine, where you will begin to enjoy exceptional views of the city of Ushuaia and its peninsula, Beagle Channel and Bridges Islands.
The vegetation of the sub-Antarctic forest is truly impressive, and you will spot many different species along the path: the lenga beech tree, the sour cherry tree, winter’s bark, Chilean fire brush and the Magellan berry, in addition to varied flora and fauna. Later you will reach the coast of Beagle Channel, where two Chilean islands, Navarino and Hoste, come into view.
A bit further along the coastal path, will ride to Concheros, an area once inhabited by the Yamanas, an ancient culture of nomads who lived in Tierra del Fuego.
Before returning to the point of departure, you will cross the Pipo River atop your horse, an exciting end to this unforgettable adventure.
